Animal Rescue Following Hurricane Katrina

Background:  Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on Aug. 29th, 2005.  Within days, animal-lovers from around the country began gathering to launch a massive effort to rescue animals that were left behind.  Many regional organizations sent volunteers, including ten of us from the Humane Society of Rochester and Monroe County, also called the Humane Society at Lollypop Farm.

The animal-rescue operation was based at an emergency shelter set up at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, a large fairgrounds about an hour's drive north of New Orleans.  Every morning, search-and-rescue teams would go to New Orleans to rescue dogs, cats, and other animals – and then bring them to the temporary shelter.  We would also leave food and water for those animals we couldn't catch.  Approximately 10,000 animals were saved altogether.

If you truly want to help animals, then the best thing you can do is to go vegan.  Don't eat animals, don't wear them, and don't use them for entertainment.
